Vodafone is ready for 5.5G

Engin Aksoy, CEO of Vodafone Turkey, answered Vahap Munyar’s questions on the YouTube channel of How Bir Economy TV and pointed out that a balanced and fair competitive environment should be created in the sector. Aksoy, “We became the fastest growing operator in the first 9 months of the year. As Vodafone Türkiye, we serve 25.4 million mobile and 1.4 million fixed broadband customers. “The number of monthly active customers using our digital channels was 17.6 million, and the total monthly interaction of these customers was 304 million.” he said.

Additionally, Aksoy, while underlining the opportunities that 5G technology will bring, stated that the technology that Vodafone will launch will actually be 5.5G:

“The technology we will launch as Vodafone Türkiye will actually be 5.5G technology. So, we basically We are ready for 5.5G, not 5G. It is important to underline that during the transition to this new technology, tender conditions should be created by considering the investment-liability balance. It is important to create the necessary environment and conditions for 5G to be fully implemented. This is undoubtedly The most important part is to have a widespread fiber network covering the whole country.

Stating that the 5G calendar is expected to be officially announced in the coming days, Aksoy stated that 5G will increase the user experience capacity rather than increasing individual data consumption. Aksoy did not go into the details of the 5.5G discourse.

“Joint infrastructure company”

While Vodafone argues that fixed and mobile license extension processes should be carried out in accordance with international standards and under equal conditions, Aksoy said: “In our report titled Fixed Broadband Policies on the Path to Digitalization, we point out that in order to expand fiber infrastructure, structural reforms such as unbundling should be implemented and a common infrastructure company should be established simultaneously with unbundling. In addition, we emphasize that the license extension process should be used as an opportunity to implement the necessary reforms, that the extension should be carried out fairly, and that the license extension process should be made balanced, fair and predictable, regardless of mobile and fixed. According to the policy recommendations we included in our report, Turkey will see a de facto development in the next 15-20 years. The way to avoid monopoly is through structural separation and establishing a common infrastructure company. he said.

What is 5.5G?

5G Advanced, or 5.5G as we will often hear in Turkey, is the next evolutionary stage of current 5G technology. This technology will improve network performance through better mobility, higher reliability, and innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), delivering significant improvements in energy efficiency and spectral efficiency. It will also be fully backwards compatible, so older 5G devices can be serviced.
