A revolutionary development in cancer treatment was announced by South Korean scientists. from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) researchers, colon cancer cells with a genetic intervention to healthy cells managed to transform. This new approach has the potential to be a game-changer in the fight against cancer.

Beyond current treatment methods

Most cancer treatments today focus on killing cancerous cells. However, these methods often cause damage to healthy cells and tissues. Even though the cancer is under control when the treatment is successful, side effects can seriously affect patients’ quality of life.

The new method developed by the KAIST team follows a different path. Instead of killing cancer cells, researchers have developed a drug that helps these cells turn into healthy cells. a genetic mechanism discovered. In this process, the threat of cancer is eliminated without any loss of cellular material.

Researchers worked on a digital system that models the development process of healthy cells. In the process, they identified “master regulatory” molecules that play a role in the differentiation of cells lining the intestinal wall. When these molecules, MYB, HDAC2 and FOXA2, are suppressed, colon cancer cells returned to a healthy state.

The experiments were validated through digital modelling, molecular experiments and tests on mice. KAIST Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho commented on this discovery as follows: “It is an amazing phenomenon that cancer cells can be transformed back into normal cells. “This study proves that such reversal can be systematically induced.”

The researchers tested this method not only with colon cancer cells, but also with cells located in the hippocampus region of the mouse brain. This method, which also has the potential to stop the progression of brain cancer, is also being investigated how it can be applied to other types of cancer. Developing this technology in a way that can return cancer cells in other organs to normal could create a radical change in cancer treatment.
