Turkish Language AssociationAccording to the statement made by (TDK), 7 words and concepts determined by the Evaluation Board, consisting of experts in their fields, in cooperation with TDK and Ankara University Communication Research and Application Center (İLAUM), were submitted to public voting on the Turkish Language Association website. As a result of the survey conducted by TDK, the word of the year 2024 is “crowd loneliness” was.

The word of the year is “crowded loneliness”

The words worth voting were determined as “Crowded Loneliness”, “Compassion”, “Alienation”, “Algorithm”, “Corruption”, “Artificial Intelligence” and “Digital Fatigue”. It was announced that the concept of “crowded loneliness” was chosen as the “word and concept of 2024” in the public vote in which approximately 1 million people participated.

On the other hand, the evaluation board also explained what the concept of “Crowded Loneliness” was and the reason for its selection.

“In 2024, There is an increasing number of studies showing that people feel lonely in crowds. It appears to be. ‘Loneliness’, which stands for oneness and ‘crowd’, which stands for multiplicity, can exist at the same time. This situation, which can be explained by sociological, psychological and communicative reasons, manifests itself in the daily lives of individuals and in the forms of relationships they establish.”

Social media increases loneliness

In the statement, it was stated that with the increasing use of social media and digital technologies, people started to feel more lonely and the following statements were made:

“Although the increasing importance of the number of followers and likes in the social media environment and creating a so-called ‘crowded’ environment is perceived as a solution to the feeling of loneliness, it produces a result that increases the feeling of loneliness. The fact that the digital world offers temporary relationships deepens the feeling of loneliness. On the other hand, with the increasing speed of life and increasing human mobility, Individuals who have difficulty in establishing bonds as social ties weaken, feel lonely in crowds.. The fact that there are many people around an individual does not mean that he does not feel lonely. Having family members in the same house does not prevent feeling lonely at the same dinner table.”
