Superheroes of technology: Here are the 10 most powerful supercomputers!

The development of supercomputers is advancing rapidly, with innovations pushing the boundaries of technology. However, when it comes to supercomputer, we should not reduce it to a level that can be compared to a gaming computer.

If you think your gaming computer has high performance, meet the supercomputer! So what are these supercomputers?

We can say that these are the Superman of ordinary computers. Instead of just hiding in closed environments, they display their superpowers in a wide range of activities, from scientific research to climate modelling. So much so that a supercomputer can perform millions of complex calculations per second, while your top-end gaming computer can only run demanding games fluently.

THERE IS ‘EL CAPITAN’ AT THE SUMMIT

For example, El Capitan, the king of supercomputers, has a huge power of 1,742 petaflops and is the fastest supercomputer in the world.

In comparison, your gaming PC can run at a maximum performance of a few teraflops (that’s one millionth of the power of supercomputers!). Thanks to their computing power, supercomputers are used in many critical areas, from nuclear research to artificial intelligence modeling. So, “why did the FPS drop?” while playing games at home. If you’re wondering, it’s time to look sideways at a supercomputer!

ONE IS SUPERMAN AND THE OTHER IS JUST STRONG

These developments provide major advances not only in scientific research, but also in areas such as climate modelling, artificial intelligence research and big data analysis. As a simple example, when compared to the 0.0167 petaflops computing capacity of a new game console PlayStation 5 Pro, the power of these supercomputers becomes even more striking.

But remember, supercomputers are not your home gaming computer. Comparing them would be like comparing Superman to Tom Stoltman, who won the World’s Strongest Man contest. One is bulletproof, the other is the strongest human…

Supercomputers are technological marvels designed to solve the world’s complex problems.

So think twice before calling a computer ‘superb’…

After all this explanation, I think it is time to take a look at the world’s most powerful supercomputers and the operating system and chip power behind them.

Here are the world’s most powerful supercomputers:

SO WHAT IS THIS PETAFLOPS?

Petaflops is a term used to measure the performance of supercomputers. “FLOPS” means “Floating Point Operations Per Second”.

For example, a 1 petaflops supercomputer can perform a quadrillion calculations per second. This computing power enables supercomputers to perform very fast and complex calculations in fields such as scientific research, climate modelling, big data analysis and artificial intelligence studies.

El Capitan’s system, which received the title of the world’s fastest supercomputer supported by AMD, ranked first in the Top500 list with its performance of 1,742 exaflops (1,742 billion quintillion calculations per second), leaving the previous leader Frontier behind. El Capitan is equipped with 5.4 petabytes of main memory and includes 44,544 AMD MI300A APUs.

This tremendous performance opens up new opportunities, especially for nuclear research and complex scientific calculations. It will also be used to increase the aging effects and secrecy of the nuclear stockpile by simulating underground explosions.

This success of El Capitan is considered an indicator of the rapid development in supercomputer technologies. This performance allows simulations and data analysis to be carried out much faster and in more detail.

TURKEY’S QUANTUM COMPUTER

Türkiye also continues to rapidly advance scientific and technological developments. In this context, Turkey’s first quantum computer QuanT, developed and commissioned by TOBB University of Economics and Technology (TOBB ETÜ), is an indicator of the country’s success in this field. QuanT has the capacity to process large amounts of data simultaneously, performing operations millions of times faster. This development is considered as a step that carries Turkey’s technology vision forward.

Presidency Defense Industry President Haluk Görkün stated that the budget of the defense industry is 15 billion dollars, and 3 billion dollars of this has been transformed with deep technologies and fast product returns. In Turkey, the market segment of quantum technologies is expected to be 2 trillion dollars in 2035. In line with this goal, some projects that can be transformed into products with doner kebabs in the short term have entered the prioritization process. For example, the Microwave Quantum Radar Components Development (KUDAR) Project stands out as an important step for the defense industry.
