Seamless updates run using two sets of partitions: slot A and slot B. The system runs from one slot while the other is kept spare and unused. System updates are installed in this spare slot. After the reboot, the active slot is replaced with this updated spare slot and the system boots immediately. In this way, you will be faced with the “Installing update” or “Optimizing applications” boot screen for less time. A working copy of the system continues to be kept in the first slot in case the update does not install properly.
Continuous updates require more storage space than non-A/B update systems.
