Disney’s animated movie Moana was very successful when it was released in 2016 and grossed $643 million. That’s why expectations are now quite high from the sequel. However, Moana 2 exceeded even those expectations.

Moana 2, which was released this week, grossed $221 million in the United States in its opening weekend, while collecting $165.3 million from the rest of the countries. Reaching a total revenue of 386.3 million dollars in its first weekend, Moana 2 broke multiple records.

Moana 2 Became the Best Opening Animated Movie of All Time

Moana 2, which surpassed even hugely successful productions such as Super Mario Bros. Movie, Inside Out 2, and Frozen 2, became the animated movie that had the best opening of all time in the USA. It also broke a global record with its first week performance. Previously, the highest-grossing animated film in its first week was Super Mario Bros. Movie, with $377.2 million in revenue.

Of course, Moana 2 had a significant advantage in this regard. Because the film’s release coincided with the five-day Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. That’s why there was a rush at the box office throughout the week instead of just a two-day weekend. Still, we have to say that the film exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.

A live-action (non-animated) adaptation of Moana, which has achieved great success on the animation side, is also being shot. This adaptation, in which Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role in animated films, will meet moviegoers in 2026.
