Qualcomm with ARM The close friendship between them, which continued for years, was broken by the Nuvia initiative founded by engineers who left Apple. Nuvia, which developed efficiency-oriented ARM architecture, was acquired by Qualcomm after a while and started to give life to Snapdragon X chipsets.
However, ARM did not give up on the matter. Arguing that the licenses inherited from the Nuvia initiative should be destroyed, ARM requested a new contract. When Qualcomm insisted that the existing license agreement was valid, the issue was taken to court.
In court, the jury ruled in favor of Qualcomm and ruled that the existing ARM license agreement was valid. Thus, ARM will not be able to arbitrarily terminate the existing contract and Qualcomm will continue to sell chips, including the Nuvia architecture.
On the other hand, the jury did not make a clear decision on whether the Nuvia initiative violated ARM patents, which ARM filed a lawsuit regarding. Nevertheless, the court recommended that both parties reach a compromise on this issue and prevent a new lawsuit from being filed. While Qualcomm shares rose after the news, the way was paved for ARM license partners to claim rights in a similar situation.
