Boyens says that as they read JRR Tolkien’s works set in Middle Earth, they encounter many different stories that are interconnected, and he thinks that all these stories can be the source of many films. Moreover, not all of these movies have to be live-action.
Saying that he was fascinated by this format while preparing the anime movie War of the Rohirrim, Boyens states that he would love to see other anime movies set in Middle Earth. According to Boyens, this will depend on how War of the Rohirrim responds to audiences. If the movie attracts attention from the audience, it will pave the way for new anime set in Middle Earth. Boyens also says that a sequel to The War of the Rohirrim could be made.
Explaining that the course of the Lord of the Rings films will generally depend on the audience, Boyens says that they are focusing on single-story films for now, but if things get bigger, they can also shoot a new trilogy as epic as The Lord of the Rings. According to Boyens, there are other stories in the Middle-earth oeuvre that could be turned into a trilogy as big as the original trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim will be released on December 13. For The Hunt for Gollum, we will have to wait until 2026.
