This mission is a follow-up to the unmanned Artemis 1, which was successfully completed in November 2022. However, unexpected damage to the Orion capsule’s heat shield during Artemis 1 caused NASA to review its mission plans.

According to NASA’s detailed investigations, the Orion capsule’s heat shield material, called Avcoat, did not allow enough gas to escape when heated. This causes the material to partially crack and become damaged. Despite this, during the mission, temperature sensors inside the capsule showed that a safe environment was provided for the crew.

For Artemis 2, engineers stated that the capsule could be used safely without making any changes to the heat shield. It was announced at that time that the safety of the astronauts could be ensured by making changes to the capsule’s re-entry route into the atmosphere, such as entry angles. However, NASA does not want to compromise on security.

In Artemis 3, humanity will launch a new era of exploration by landing on the south pole of the Moon. But for this more complex mission, NASA is innovating the process of manufacturing heat shields with data from Artemis 1.
