More than 7,500 people met with art and science at Studio STEAM

Studio STEAM has implemented a work that it emphasizes focuses on exploring the relationship of art with biological materials, engineering ideas and artificial intelligence.

Designed with artists as a learning space for the first time under the roof of a museum in Turkey, Studio STEAM brings together fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics with art for both young people and adults. In the Studio STEAM training programs that started with the opening of Istanbul Modern’s new museum building, more than 7,500 people have had the opportunity to develop their critical and creative thinking skills so far, thanks to applications that bring together art and science. The first year evaluation of Studio STEAM, where a total of 126 public institutions, especially high schools and universities, and local governments carry out free training activities, was hosted by Istanbul Modern Chairman of the Board Oya Eczacıbaşı and P&G Turkey, Caucasus and Central Asia Chairman Tankut Turnaoğlu. It was held in a special meeting held in .

“IT WILL BE AMONG THE INNOVATIVE EXAMPLES IN THE WORLD”

Istanbul Modern Chairman of the Board of Directors, Oya Eczacıbaşı, emphasized the importance of the project and said, “We attach importance to creating interdisciplinary education models that are original and inspiring for our country in order to increase the talents of young people in the fields of creativity and innovation. Our educational approach, which centers on people and our future, creates a more holistic meaning in Studio STEAM and, of course, in our new museum building. “I believe that this special workshop area we created for Studio STEAM in the museum will be among the innovative examples in the world,” he said. Eczacıbaşı continued as follows:

Istanbul Modern prepares and implements more than 100 training programs every year. More than 1 million children and young people have benefited from these programs prepared under the roof of the museum since 2004. We continue to create innovative, original and inspiring interdisciplinary education models for our country to develop their creativity. We bring together not only children but also audiences of all ages with art in learning areas designed by taking inspiration from the works of artists in the museum collection, their creative processes, nature or different production techniques of art. At Studio STEAM, we offer art to participants from a creative, innovative and interdisciplinary perspective through the programs we develop by establishing connections with artists who see technology and science as an integral part of their production.”

P&G Turkey, Caucasus and Central Asia Chairman Tankut Turnaoğlu said, “One of the works we have carried out is the Studio STEAM project, which came to life in cooperation with Istanbul Modern with our Oral-B iO series, which provides personalized and superior cleaning with artificial intelligence technology. Oral-B’s DNA The innovative spirit in iO brings together high technology, smart features and aesthetics in the iO series, and this feature offers the user an experience beyond daily care. iO’s artificial intelligence-supported personalized feedback features, engineering and design details, Istanbul Modern. “The coming together of Oral-B iO and Istanbul Modern symbolizes an important step towards making technology and art accessible to everyone.”

THE NEW PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Istanbul Modern Education and Social Projects Director Neslihan Varol Giving information about the content of the programs, he said, “Studio STEAM offers an interdisciplinary experience to its participants. In our first year, we held two training programs titled ‘Art with Biological Materials’ and ‘Unreasonable Machines’. With these programs, participants developed their creative thinking skills and discovered art from different perspectives. Our new program focuses on the concept of artificial intelligence. “Studio STEAM is an inspiring learning space that offers art education opportunities to its participants, especially to interpret artworks produced with current technologies,” he said.

The new program, designed together with Studio STEAM consultant educator and contemporary artist Bager Akbay in the ongoing Oral-B iO collaboration, addressing the relationship between artificial intelligence and art, will be implemented in December 2024.

In the first program organized within the scope of the Studio STEAM project, the “Art with Biological Materials” program, designed by Istanbul Modern Education and Social Projects Department in collaboration with contemporary artist Nergiz Yeşil, offered participants the opportunity to observe objects made of biological materials and produce artworks based on scientific methods. In this workshop, participants explored the concept of “bio art” in depth, observed the artist’s productions prepared for the program through microscopes, and carried out works that brought together the concepts of science and art in activities designed with the artist.

Studio STEAM brings together engineering and art in its second training program called “Machines Without a Cause”, which also includes Oral-B’s magnetic technology. In the program carried out in collaboration with interdisciplinary artist Bilal Yılmaz, participants create mechanisms to tell their own stories with an artistic approach. In the program, Bilal Yılmaz’s sound installation called “Acoustic iO”, which is built with the body mechanisms of Oral-B iO rechargeable toothbrushes, offers participants an experimental sound design space. In the “Machines Without a Cause” training program, where young people and adults produce artistic works with materials reminiscent of industrial production, participants build creative bridges between the fields of engineering, craft and art.

“Acoustic iO: Sound Design Project”, which was realized with the invitation of Bilal Yılmaz and the participation of 10 independent sound artists, is an example of how Studio STEAM’s educational programs can inspire artistic production areas. This special work, in which the participating artists transformed the industrial sound recordings they obtained while experiencing Acoustic iO, created by using the body mechanisms of Oral-B iO rechargeable toothbrushes, into sound compositions by interpreting them with their musical knowledge, draws attention as an innovative production. Among the artists participating in the Akustik iO: Sound Design Project were Dasenektif, Fat, Fosil, İdil Ko, Mafiyens, Neval, Pelbender, Semi, Uase and Zeynal.
