A product for the largest business branch of Amazon, the world e-commerce giant and an indispensable company for hot deals. renewable energy Collaboration started with the initiative. Providing cloud services through data center Amazon Web Services service has become Amazon’s main source of profit in recent years. The beginning of this service actually has an interesting story. Amazon, which established a huge cloud infrastructure to handle instantaneous overloads, then started to make money by opening this infrastructure, which was generally idle, to its data center customers, and over time, it turned into a big business line. Now, it currently serves in various parts of the world with hundreds of data centers.

The company is now planning to invest heavily in renewable energy and save these data centers from fossil fuels. However, solar energy, which can be produced most easily, unfortunately produces energy for 8 hours a day. In order for data centers to serve the rest of the time, the excess electricity produced must be stored in some way. However, conventional lithium-based batteries for providing electricity throughout the night remain extremely expensive. On the other hand, the fact that these batteries are explosive and flammable is not good for data centers.

Unbound Potential This is where the initiative called comes into play. Because they are working on a fluid battery technology. Fluid batteries are a type of battery created by storing the voltage difference in different electrolytes, that is, liquids. In short, you use two liquids to charge the battery, charge one positively and the other negatively, then store it in different tanks. At this stage, the larger your tank is, the more energy you can store. In this way, Amazon will ensure that its data centers operate with electricity generated from the sun, both when there is no daylight and even during cloudy times.

The materials used here are generally as follows: electrolyte liquids, membranes where energy is exchanged but prevent the liquids from mixing, pumps and of course tanks. As you can guess, the most difficult part among the above materials is membrane technology. This membrane is difficult and expensive to make, and the fact that it is the part that wears out the quickest is another source of expense.

The initiative is quite ambitious, saying that it will completely eliminate the membrane, which constitutes approximately 30% of the total investment cost. It achieves this with immiscible liquids such as oil and water. These liquids are non-flammable, durable for up to 20 thousand charge/discharge cycles, and can return 85% of the electricity you store.

Founded in Switzerland 3 years ago in 2021, this startup agreed with Amazon for its first pilot facility. Amazon for the battery with a total of 6 MWs 2 million euros will provide support and put it into service in the data center building.

The only drawback of the system is its energy storage density. In a given example, in a volume of 40 containers only 10 MWs Energy can be stored, but this is not a problem since the electricity storage system produced by the company will be fixed. The company currently plans to provide services in the field of electricity storage for 4-10 hours, but says it can produce products for up to 20 hours if desired. Other details of the system to be established for Amazon are not yet clear.
