While NASA’s WISE Telescope – Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer spacecraft entered orbit in 2009, it was hibernated about two years later. Then in 2013 NEOWISE The so-called vehicle was awakened from its sleep for a new mission focused on hunting for asteroids and comets. NEOWISE, who now closed his eyes forever and returned to Earth last month, shared wonderful space visuals.

NEOWISE, which has been on duty for about 15 years, has revealed the secrets of the universe by performing 21 different infrared scans. The telescope had already ended its active mission before falling to Earth on November 1. The NEOWISE team released six exclusive images from the telescope’s archives on November 26 to celebrate the success of the mission. Located in the constellation Perseus, this 100-light-year-wide California Nebula lies approximately 1,000 light years away. The nebula takes its name from its shape, which resembles the California coastline. The images also include the Gecko Nebula, part of which resembles a lizard’s nose. A baby star in a red hue can be seen at the nose of the nebula. The star is in the final stages of formation and is now swallowing the last bits of its fuel. Additionally, gas jets around the star are breaking through the dust clouds around it.

A third, newly released image shows the tadpole-like CG12 nebula. In the image, tail-shaped dust threads stand out, which WISE easily detects with infrared light. You can see all six newly published images in the gallery below.

The data provided by NEOWISE will guide not only today’s but also future astronomers. The huge archive of data collected throughout the mission will be examined again and again with new tools and techniques to better understand the structure of the universe. NEOWISE Deputy Principal Investigator Joe Masiero emphasizes the importance of this archive with the following words: “Watching changes in the sky for almost 15 years has opened up a new scientific field for everything from the closest asteroids to the most distant quasars.”
