According to Bloomberg News, Chinese officials are in preliminary talks about the possibility of selling the company’s US operations to billionaire Elon Musk if TikTok cannot prevent the upcoming ban. The news, based on sources, also stated that Beijing officials preferred TikTok to remain under the control of Bytedance, its parent company.
While the report stated that TikTok’s US operations could be sold through a competitive process or through an agreement through the government, it was also emphasized that the future of the application is no longer under the control of ByteDance alone. According to the news, the Chinese government has a significant stake in ByteDance, and some members of Congress state that this gives the government authority and power over TikTok.
According to a scenario included in the report, Musk will take control of TikTok, together with the social media platform X, in the USA and manage them all together. According to Bloomberg News, officials have not yet reached a consensus on how to proceed.
However, a quick response came from the TikTok spokesperson regarding the issue. In response to the news, the spokesperson said, “We cannot be expected to comment on news that is completely fictional.”
It remains unclear how aware ByteDance is of the talks or the TikTok process with Musk.
TikTok has previously said the government’s stake ‘has no impact on ByteDance’s global operations outside of China, including TikTok’.
Last week, it was stated that the Supreme Court was close to approving the law that would require the sale or ban of TikTok in the USA by January 19 due to national security concerns regarding China.
