A new device that reboots iPhones that haven’t been unlocked in a while, making it harder for cops to break into a suspect’s phone for forensic analysis. iOS 18 security feature appeared.

According to a report by 404 Media, researchers suspect that Apple has implemented a new security function in iOS 18.1. Due to inertial reboots, unlocking compromised devices is currently much more difficult for researchers.

Restarting puts affected devices into safe mode. Researchers draw attention to two situations; “After first unlocking” (SWEAT) and “Before the first unlock” (BFU). When the iPhone is restarted, the device cannot be unlocked with biometric methods such as Face ID or Touch ID, the password must be entered once. Investigators and forensic experts call this condition BFU. AFU refers to the device being unlocked at least once with a password or Face ID/Touch ID.

Since the release of iOS 18, it has become more common for iPhones to suddenly reboot in labs and go into BFU mode after being without a cellular connection for an extended period of time. This looks like iPhones are like those offered by the company Cellebrite better protected against unlocking attempts using special devices It means.
