Threads will reopen in Turkey
In order to address anti-competitive concerns, Meta submitted a comprehensive commitment text to the Competition Authority on October 30, 2024. Background of the process
At the Competition Board meeting dated November 23, 2023, an investigation was launched on the grounds that Meta combined user data by connecting the application called Threads with Instagram and that this violated the law. During the investigation, it was determined that Meta transferred data between Threads and Instagram and that this data was used for various purposes, especially advertising services.
In order to prevent these violations, the Board issued a temporary injunction in February 2024 prohibiting the combination of data collected through the Threads application with Instagram data. However, Meta did not comply with these obligations and was fined 335 million TL. Although Meta offered solution suggestions during this process, they were deemed insufficient and were not accepted. Ultimately, instead of presenting a new solution proposal to the Institution, Meta decided to implement the solution via the Threads application as of April 29, 2024.
