Gladiator 2 was content with second place at the box office

Adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, Wicked was the movie that dominated the box office this weekend. This 160-minute musical, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, exceeded even the most optimistic expectations and grossed $114 million in the United States alone in its first weekend. On the other hand, Gladiator 2 fell below expectations and opened in the USA with $55.5 million.
It May Not Be Easy to Budget Gladiator 2
In today’s conditions, an opening of $55 million would be considered successful for many films. However, when it comes to a movie like Gladiator 2 with a budget of 250-300 million dollars, it is not possible to say the same. Fortunately, the film’s worldwide grosses are doing a little better. The new Gladiator movie has collected a total of 221 million dollars as of today.
However, this figure needs to be much higher in order to cover the cost of the film. Because in addition to the production budget of over 250 million, almost 100 million dollars were spent on the promotion of the film. Considering that a portion of the revenue goes to theaters, the figure that Gladiator 2 needs to reach in order to turn a profit is 550-600 million dollars. Fortunately, the movie will still be released during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, which is generally a very productive time for theaters.
