The European Commission said it had identified potentially prohibited geo-blocking practices in some Apple Media Services and could be sanctioned by national regulators if Apple does not address these concerns. European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in her statement: “We are accelerating the fight against geo-blocking. No company, large or small, should unfairly discriminate against customers based on their nationality, place of residence or place of establishment.”
The European Union gave Apple one month to address these detected geo-blocking practices. During this time, Apple is expected to submit commitments stating how it will remove geo-blocking apps.
Geo-blocking means restricting access to content based on the user’s geographical location. This practice may block the global reach of digital content by limiting users’ access to certain services or content. The European Union argues that such practices violate consumer rights and undermine the effectiveness of the digital single market.
