Neil deGrasse Tyson, who was a guest on comedian Bill Maher’s program, criticized Elon Musk’s plan to establish a colony on Mars. Thinking that the possibility of this plan becoming reality is not very high, Tyson stated that this will not happen unless states think that establishing a colony on Mars will be in our geopolitical interest.
Admitting that Donald Trump, who will become the US president again in a few months, is interested in the Mars project, Tyson pointed out that showing interest is not the same as allocating money for it. When it comes to allocating a hefty budget to the project, one might realize that there’s no real return on that interest, according to Tyson: “At some point, someone is going to have to pay for it, and showing interest in something is not the same as spending money on it.”
Neil deGrasse Tyson also opposes the idea of Mars being seen as the salvation of humanity. When presenter Bill Maher says, “What if we focus on solving problems on Earth instead of going to Mars?” Tyson says he agrees. In this regard, Tyson said that investing in Mars is a terrible offer in terms of return and stated that no investor today would spend more than five minutes on such an offer.
Of course, these statements of Tyson did not remain unanswered. Elon Musk shared on X about this conversation: “Wow, they really don’t understand the issue. Mars is the key to the long-term survival of consciousness (conscious beings)… Also, I don’t ask for money from any investors. I also know that it doesn’t make sense financially. O That’s why I’m fundraising.”
