Denis Villeneuve, a guest on Matt Belloni’s podcast The Town, says he lost interest in Star Wars years ago. Stating that he was a true Star Wars fan when he was a child, the director says that he has never looked forward to any movie as excitedly as he did The Empire Strikes Back, and that he watched it in the cinema many times when it came out. What spoiled the entire series for Villeneuve was Return of the Jedi, the last film of the original trilogy.
Saying that Star Wars lost its way with Return of the Jedi in 1983, Villeneuve, like many Star Wars fans, complains about the Ewoks and says that Return of the Jedi turned Star Wars into a comedy made for children. Villeneuve, who said that he was so angry at that time that he wanted to go to Los Angeles and talk to George Lucas, states that he cannot get over that disappointment even today.
Denis Villeneuve thinks that Star Wars has become more dogmatic over time and has turned into a recipe that no longer leaves room for surprises. That’s why he states that he doesn’t plan on doing a Star Wars job.
