General Directorate of Civil Aviation According to the new regulation made by (SHGM) and published in the Official Gazette Flights delayed for more than three hours for passengers compensation payable. Under the new regulation, the compensation that passengers will receive will vary depending on whether the flight is domestic or international and the flight distance.

Stating that compensation was paid to passengers in case of cancellation of flights before, Uraloğlu said that this practice does not exist in case of delay of flights. In fact, in the old regulation, while compensation was paid to foreign passengers arriving or departing from the EU within the scope of the EU Passenger Rights Regulation, Turkish passengers were not paid compensation. With the new regulation, this difference is removed and compliance with international standards is achieved. Uraloğlu “We implemented the regulation in question during the winter period, when operations are less busy, in order to facilitate the adaptation of airline companies. “We expect positive effects to be seen in the summer.” he said.

As a result of the steps taken, passengers were given the right to compensation if flights were delayed for 3 hours or more due to technical and operational reasons. This right to compensation is regulated in a way that varies depending on whether the flight is domestic or international and the flight distance:

  • Domestic Flights: 100 euro compensation will be paid.
  • International Flights:
    • 250 euros for flights up to 1,500 kilometers,
    • 400 euros for flights between 1,500-3,500 kilometers,
    • For flights longer than 3,500 kilometers, compensation of 600 euros will be paid.

Compensation payments will be made in Turkish Lira based on the foreign exchange selling rate of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey on the date of payment.

On the other hand, this regulation is not a right that automatically comes into play when compensation conditions are met; In order to receive compensation, passengers must apply to the airline company.
