LinkedIn introduced a new setting in August that allowed users to control whether to share their data, but updated the policy again shortly after. The updated policy stated that LinkedIn could be used to train artificial intelligence systems even if the user chooses not to share their data. The policy also said that any data used for AI training cannot be removed or retrieved.
The lawsuit alleges that LinkedIn committed a security breach by sharing the private information of Premium users without permission. Users are demanding financial compensation ($1,000 per person).
Collecting data from the internet to train productive AI models is nothing new. AI companies have faced scrutiny, including lawsuits, on this issue. For example; Mark Zuckerberg was revealed to have approved the use of LibGen, a dataset of pirated e-books and articles, to train Llama AI models. Major newspapers also filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI.
