The Brazilian Ministry of Labor (MPT) launched an investigation into working conditions at the construction site following an inspection on November 11, following an anonymous complaint filed on September 30. A development that further exacerbates this situation is the article published by journalist André Uzeda in Agência Pública against the Chinese workers involved in the project. physical violence and extremely poor working conditions was the report claiming. Currently, MPT, BYD and three subcontractors undertaking the construction of the factory are investigating.
According to estimates, approximately 470 Chinese workers are working in the construction. Most of these workers work for Jinjiang Group, which provides excavation services, and it is stated that the group employs approximately 280 workers. Open Steel, which is responsible for metal structure production, employs 100 Chinese workers, while AE Corp, responsible for internal metal structure assembly, has 90 Chinese workers.
Shared photos reveal dirty toilets and degrading eating conditions for workers. Accommodations are described as dirty, crowded, poorly lit and without discrimination between men and women.
More worrying is the emergence of videos, audio recordings and photographs showing violence against workers by foremen. It is stated that such incidents occur regularly, usually when workers do not comply with the rules or work is delayed.
Allegedly, one of the reasons for the ill-treatment is the delays in the construction of the factory. In the first phase of the project, 26 new structures, including the test track and other equipment, were planned to be completed by the end of this year. However, the completion of this phase is expected to be delayed until January.
It is reported that Brazilian workers are not exposed to such harsh working conditions. BYD workers work from 8 in the morning to 6 in the evening, with a one-hour lunch break; Brazilian workers working in subcontracted companies work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a two-hour lunch break. Approximately 590 Brazilian workers work in the construction.
BYD held Jinjiang Group responsible for the practices and demanded that the group take immediate action. The BYD factory is being built in Camaçari, on a 4.6 million square meter land allocated by the state government. Construction began in March and the factory is located at the site where Ford operated for 20 years and closed in 2021. BYD paid 287.8 million Reais (48 million US dollars) for this domain.
