Nintendo confirms critical feature of Switch 2
Nintendo has confirmed that its next-generation console, Switch 2, will have backward compatibility to support older Switch games. This feature means existing Switch owners can continue to use their existing game libraries and Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions when they get the new console.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced at the company’s annual financial report and management policy meeting that the Switch 2 is designed to support older Switch games and that the Nintendo Switch Online service will also be available on the new console. This means you can also play games from Nintendo’s past consoles.
ANNOUNCEMENT DATE IS CERTAIN
Furukawa stated that Switch 2 will be announced before March 31, 2025, and that this feature will help the early adoption of the console. Nintendo added that it plans to share more information on this issue in the future.
EXISTING COLLECTIONS WILL BE PROTECTED
This decision by Nintendo will allow players to protect their existing game collections, in line with similar practices of its competitors such as PlayStation and Xbox. This feature will be an important factor in the launch of Switch 2.
