Nuclear energy company founded by Bill Gates Terrapower, 345 MW received approval from the Wyoming Industrial Settlement Council (ISC) for its nuclear reactor using sodium-cooled nuclear reactor technology. This approval is the company’s first Sodium This applies to the first unit of the Kemmerer Power Station. The approval enables the start of construction of non-nuclear units, specifically the energy island portion where molten salt energy storage tanks and turbines are located, and covers all construction and operational activities that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Natrium: Nuclear energy with storage

Natrium’s technology, 345 MW capacity sodium cooled with fast reactor together on a gigawatt scale molten salt based energy storage contains the system. The system can increase energy output up to 500 MWe when needed and maintain this capacity for more than 5.5 hours. This technology, which uses a high percentage of low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel, provides integration with renewable energy sources and increases the durability of the energy grid.

With this permit received from the Wyoming ISC, TerraPower will accelerate work in accordance with the construction schedule. While the company plans to start construction of the Kemmerer Training Center and energy island in 2025, it will also continue the work on the sodium testing and filling facility, which was started in 2024. said Chris Levesque, President and CEO of TerraPower. “This is the first state permit issued for a commercial-scale advanced nuclear project and is a testament to the groundbreaking work of our TerraPower team.” he said.

TerraPower, largely funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, is the first and only developer to file with the NRC for commercial advanced nuclear reactors. The application, made in March 2024, is expected to be approved in December 2026.

TerraPower is building this project through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP). Once completed, the Natrium power plant will replace a retired coal-fired power plant. Thus, Natrium is the world’s switching from coal to nuclear It will be its first power plant. The facility is planned to be completed in 2031.

Meanwhile, TerraPower is building an enrichment facility in South Africa to produce the high levels of low-enriched uranium (HALEU) required for Natrium reactors. The company will finance this facility using innovative laser-based technologies within the scope of its agreement with ASP Isotopes. This is an important event. Because the USA is dependent on Russia for nuclear fuel.
