Google paid nearly million under Canada’s “Online News Act”

According to CBC’s report, Google announced that it paid approximately $70 million (100 million Canadian dollars) to CJC, in accordance with the agreement made with the Canadian government under the “Online News Act”.

The payment made by Google will be shared among media organizations in the country.

The Online News Act “Bill C-18”, which became law in Canada, requires companies such as Meta and Google to pay fees to Canadian media organizations for using news content on their platforms.

In order to be exempt from this law, Meta announced that Canadians’ access to news on Facebook and Instagram would be terminated in June 2023.
