While the impact of social media on society has been a matter of debate all over the world lately, there is also a serious follow-up in Turkey regarding the effects of social media applications and some online games on young people.
Mobile applications such as Roblox, Discord, TikTok and Instagram faced some restrictions both in Turkey and for this reason, they changed their policies and took steps to protect young people more and eliminate the bullying they would be exposed to online.
While some of them have been blocked, some games such as Discord and Roblox are still blocked. A new one has been added to these blocked social media applications.
Tango, the popular video and text chat application that is marked as an application that people 18+ (over 18 years of age) can download on the Google Play Store, has the Pegi 18 phrase, and has over 100 million users, was approved by the Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace on December 11. Access was closed with the decision dated 2024 and numbered 2024/15041.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said, “Will the closures continue?” at the press conference he held after the Discord application was blocked. On the question, he said, “We will clearly take every step to protect society. I won’t say it clearly, just here and there, but we are following all of them closely,” and signaled that the controls on social media will continue.
