The facility, called Megafactory, is located next to the company’s existing factory in Shanghai. The facility in question is Tesla’s first Megapack production factory outside America. The factory, whose groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 23, took seven months to complete. The company’s first factory in China was completed within a year.
Megapacks to be produced in China will be used both in the local market and exported. The facility has the capacity to produce 10 thousand Megapacks per year. This corresponds to around 40 GWh of energy storage capacity. According to Tesla, each Megapack unit can store more than 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 households for one hour.
The factory, which will produce lithium iron phosphate batteries, is built on a land of 200 thousand square meters. According to local media reports, 202 million dollars were invested in the factory. The main supplier of battery cells used in Megapacks is CATL, but Tesla plans to diversify its supply chain with different manufacturers such as BYD in the future.
