It has strategic importance for Turkey’s energy future. Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Another important stage in the (NGS) project has been left behind: The nuclear fuel of the second power unit has been safely delivered to the site. The fuel produced in Novosibirsk was delivered to Akkuyu by sea via the Russian Federation.

Akkuyu Nükleer AŞ General Manager Sergey Butckikh gave detailed information about the progress of the project after this important delivery. Butckikh, “This year our work was particularly focused on the first power unit. Our focus here was on the facilities of the 1st Commissioning Complex. We are proud to have completed the construction work on the first unit.” he said.

Fuel delivered safely

While the installation activities in the 1st unit of Akkuyu NPP were completed this year, the preparation phase for commissioning, which is the first phase of the operating and adjustment operations, has begun. Butckikh, in his statement about the second unit “We received a completely ready set for the operation of the second power unit. We will produce energy for the Republic of Türkiye by loading this fuel into the nuclear reactor every 18 months.. “The fuel was delivered on time, safely, in special containers and is now in the fresh fuel storage facility.”

Butckikh, regarding the developments in the second and third units, “In the second unit, we are assembling the nuclear reactor equipment and preparing for a very important stage, such as starting the welding of the main circulation pipeline. The assembly of the units and mechanisms of the turbine plant has started in the turbine hall. Recently, significant development took place in the third unit. The reactor pressure vessel was placed in its designed position and the turbine “The assembly and concreting operations of the foundation of the unit have been completed.” he said.

While more than 34 thousand people, 80 percent of whom are Turkish citizens, are working in the field, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has been working in the field in recent weeks. We will put the first reactor into trial production in 2025. We aim to produce the first electricity from here.” he said. Total capacity 4,8 GW There are four Russian-designed VVER 3+ generation reactors at Akkuyu NPP. Built with the “Build-Own-Operate” model, the facility will come into operation at full capacity in 2028 and will produce approximately 35 billion kWh of electricity annually, meeting 10 percent of Turkey’s electricity needs.
