Volkswagen and Rivian are working on an all-electric Golf

Volkswagen e-Golf was sacrificed from birth for the electric ID.3, but it looks like the German manufacturer electric GolfIt is getting ready to bring it back to life. Moreover, in the development of the new Golf Rivianwill also be of great help.

In today’s automotive world, it has become almost mandatory for well-established manufacturers to get help from electric vehicle companies in order to keep up with market conditions. In this context, Volkswagen also turned to Rivian and invested $5.8 billion in the company to develop electric vehicle platform and software together. This explains why Rivian is the name behind the electric Golf.

Volkswagen and Rivian are working to develop software-based electric vehicles that will be built on a new platform. The flagship model developed by the German manufacturer under the code name “Project Trinity” will also be the product of this collaboration, but the company postponed this model until 2032 for the new 100% electric Golf. Volkswagen’s CEO, Thomas Schäfer, explains the reason for this:

“We have decided how we will make the software-based vehicle. This will be done through the joint venture we created with Rivian. Here we will bring together the new electrical-electronic architecture. But we decided that we wanted to start this journey with a vehicle that is more iconic and a real volume product. That’s why with the Golf.” We’ll start.”

The next generation compact hatchback will be fully electric and will be based on the future Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) infrastructure. But the bad news is that the ninth-generation electric Golf will arrive in 2029. This will give ID.3 a chance to live for a while longer, and we already know that this model will be completely renewed in 2026. On the other hand, the arrival of the electric Golf will not destroy the internal combustion engine version.

Although the Golf will be the first model to use Rivian’s know-how within the Volkswagen brand, it will not be the first in the group. Schäfer stated that Audi and Porsche will start offering new models as early as 2027, taking advantage of this technology. We will continue to convey the developments on the subject to you, our valued readers.
