OpenAI, the developer of the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, announced that it will switch to VAT before the end of the year.
In the statement made by the company, it was noted that 20 percent VAT will begin to be collected from users as of December.
In the informative e-mail sent from the company to its users, it was stated: “We would like to inform you that value added tax will be added to your invoice as of December 1. You will need to update your OpenAI account to add a valid tax identification number.”
In the statement, users with a tax identification number were asked to share it with the company.
In the statement. “If you are VAT registered in Turkey and have a valid tax identification number, please add it to the tax status and identity section of your OpenAI account. If you do not provide a valid tax identification number by December 1, we will have to collect 20 percent VAT from your invoice,” the warning was made.
Although OpenAI has just issued this warning and update to its users, the tax in question is already being collected on all digital services under the current law. Even if users purchase premium memberships on platforms such as X or subscribe to broadcasters such as Netflix, the fees paid include taxes in accordance with the legislation. Therefore, this notification does not mean that a specific regulation has been introduced for OpenAI or artificial intelligence applications in general.
OpenAI raised $6.6 billion in new funding at a valuation of $157 billion in early October.
