BMW, which continues to make significant investments in this field despite the recent decline in electric car sales, is now undertaking a remarkable project for electric car batteries. The company will establish innovative recycling centers called Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC). In these centers, old electric car batteries will be recycled and the valuable materials in these batteries will be made reusable in production.

The first of the CRCC centers will be located in Germany’s Bavaria region, BMW’s home town. This center, which will be established on an area of 2200 square meters, will also feature energy storage systems. Thanks to this system, the remaining electricity in recycled batteries will be collected and reused. Thus, the facility’s own energy needs will be met, at least partially, from recycling.

The biggest difference of this innovative recycling method from classical models is; It collects materials such as lithium, cobalt, graphite and nickel, ready to be used directly in new battery cells. The recycling system used in CRCC centers does not require high energy-consuming chemical or thermal processes. In this way, recycling of electric car batteries will become both more efficient and more environmentally friendly. Of course, costs will also decrease.

The first CRCC center will become operational in the second half of 2025. The materials obtained from the batteries recycled here will be transferred directly to BMW’s production facilities.
