One Hundred Years of Solitude, as the name suggests, is an adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s unforgettable work. The Colombian author’s 1967 novel is considered among the most important works of world literature. That’s why expectations from the TV series adaptation are quite high.
Like the novel on which it is based, One Hundred Years of Solitude is set in the fictional South American town of Macondo and tells the multi-generational story of the Buendia family.
This series adaptation, consisting of 16 episodes in total, was shot in Colombia. Gabriel García Márquez’s family also contributed to the production of the series. One Hundred Years of Solitude, shot entirely in Spanish, is the highest-budget series Netflix has produced in Latin America to date.
The introductory text of the novel from which the series is adapted is as follows:
“Gabriel García Márquez tells the story of a family over six generations in his work inspired by his childhood experiences. In his novel, in which the author proceeds in a cyclical manner, the experiences of the Buendía family turn into a literary feast adorned with magical reality. The curse that the family could not get rid of for a hundred years is the fate of Úrsula and José. It starts with her marriage, and in this vicious circle that lasts for six generations, she gets into twisted family relationships, supernatural events, and… “You can witness the period from the birth of the people to their extinction; Márquez also deals with the rebellion against bureaucracy and labor exploitation in the novel, which takes place in the riot of sorcerers, magic-performing gypsies, the girl who eats soil, giant red ants and spirits resurrected after death.”
