In recent years, Hollywood has moved away from original films and focused on sequels and productions that are part of existing IPs, creating a reality where such films dominate the box office. This situation, which became more evident every year, peaked in 2024. So much so that, as of today, 10 of the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year are sequels.

Considering the worldwide grossing figures, the highest-grossing films of this year were:

1) Inside Out 2
2) Deadpool & Wolverine
3) Despicable Me 4
4) Dune: Part II
5) Godzilla x Kong
6) Kung-Fu Panda 4
7) Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
8) Venom: The Last Dance
9) Bad Boys: Ride or Die
10) Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

2024 May Make Cinema History

If this situation does not change in the rest of the year, it will be a first in history and 2024 will go down in history as the first year in which all of the top 10 highest-grossing films are sequels.

There are two movies that have the potential to be in the top 10 for the rest of the year. The first of these is Gladiator II and the other is Wicked. Since Gladiator II is already a sequel, it will not change this strange situation. If anything will change this picture, it will be Wicked.

However, Wicked is not actually an original production; An adaptation of the musical of the same name. But since it does not fall into the sequel category, if it enters the top 10, it will prevent the entire list from being sequels. However, this will not change the fact that there is not even a single original production on the list.
