NASA ve SpaceXone of the most ambitious and probably most critical steps of the Artemis program. Artemis 3 shared new images of Starship (a version known as the Human Landing System -HLS) that will be used to land astronauts on the Moon. These impressive designs detail every step of the process that will return humanity to the Moon and reveal Starship’s critical role in this massive mission.

In the shared images, NASA’s Orion spacecraft and SpaceX Starship HLS version docks nose to nose in lunar orbit. As part of the Artemis 3 mission, astronauts will leave the Orion capsule and move to HLS. After this stage, HLS will carry astronauts to the Moon surface. This historic moment will mark the first time humanity has set foot on the Moon since 1972.

Starship’s mission scope configuration

The design of HLS in the images reveals significant differences from the standard version of Starship. HLS, which has a white outer shell, is equipped with large windows for astronauts. Additionally, the aerodynamic fins and heat shields found in the standard Starship are not available in this version. Because there is no atmosphere on the Moon’s surface like on Earth, and therefore no abrasive friction during the descent, there is no need for these.

The HLS version of Starship is capable of carrying heavy equipment to the Moon. However, this mission requires high fuel consumption. SpaceX to solve this problem fuel in orbit transfer developed his method. In one of the images, two Starships are seen transferring fuel by docking the hull to the hull. This innovative technique will enable HLS to land on the Moon by providing the fuel required for lunar missions. SpaceX tested a different version of this during Starship’s third launch test.

In the other shared image, Starship HLS is seen igniting its engine for braking purposes during the Moon landing. There are six Raptor engines in total in the spacecraft, and two of them will be used to slow down and make a soft landing during the Moon landing.

In another image, astronauts are depicted landing on the Moon’s surface with the help of an elevator. This technology is a significant innovation in the design of HLS developed by SpaceX and NASA. In June 2024, Axiom Space’s Peggy Whitson and NASA astronaut Doug Wheelock conducted tests on SpaceX’s HLS mock-up wearing Axiom’s next-generation Moon suits. These tests confirmed that astronauts could move freely through HLS’s airlock, deck, and elevator.

Obstacles to traveling to the Moon

The Artemis 3 mission was initially planned for 2024, but the date was later moved to 2025. Later, due to the prolongation of the development process required for SpaceX’s Starship and the technical problems experienced in the heat shield of the Orion spacecraft, the mission date was postponed. Postponed to September 2026.

Although SpaceX has made great progress in the development of Starship, the test flights for this massive vehicle to successfully launch into Earth orbit have not yet been completed. The company needs to activate critical systems such as orbital flights and fuel transfer.
