British scientists, photosensitivity epilepsy developed a promising new technology for his patients. Researchers from the Universities of Glasgow and Birmingham have discovered a light that can filter out certain wavelengths of light that trigger epileptic seizures. glasses with liquid crystal lenses successfully produced its prototype. This innovative technology aims to significantly reduce the difficulties that patients with photosensitive epilepsy face in their daily lives.

Smart filtering system blocks dangerous red light

Photosensitive epilepsy, seen in approximately one in every 4,000 people worldwide, is characterized by seizures triggered by certain light and visual stimuli. Content such as the beacon lights of emergency vehicles and flashing images in television programs and video games can trigger seizures in individuals with the right combination of brightness and frequency. In fact, in the Pokémon incident that took place in 1997, the flashing red lights in the television program caused seizures in hundreds of viewers, revealing the seriousness of this risk.

The new glasses developed, especially 660-720 nanometers in the range red light spectrum is targeting. Thanks to a small circuit integrated into the glasses frame, the liquid crystals in the lenses are heated to 36.5°C. As a result of this heating, lenses are exposed to dangerous wavelengths. automatically filtering red light gains the feature. Unlike the fixed color lenses used in previous technologies, this new system offers users dynamic protection that they can activate whenever they need it.

Although the current prototype has some technical limitations, the research team continues to work to overcome these limitations. For example, the system is currently only At ambient temperatures below 26°C to work efficiently and optimizing activation time is among the required topics. Scientists aim to overcome these limitations and make the technology suitable for wider usage conditions.
