Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter this week, Ridley Scott said that the first cut he prepared for the film was 3 hours and 40 minutes and that this version could be released one day in the future. When this version will be released will depend on Gladiator 3. Scott plans to have this version ready after he’s done with Gladiator 3.
The director’s previous film, Napoleon, was also released with a 157-minute version, and later, a longer 205-minute version came to Apple TV +.
Gladiator 2 focuses on Lucius, the nephew of Emperor Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film. Connie Nielsen returns in her role from the first film to portray Lucius’ mother. Beyond that, we are faced with a completely new cast and character group.
In the film, Lucius is played by Paul Mescal (Normal People, Aftersun), a rising star of the last period, and he is accompanied by names such as Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen and Peter Mensah.
