1.5 trillion dollar utopia: What does the NEOM project aim for?

What is NEOM?
Neom is Saudi Arabia’s ambitious project aimed at diversifying the country’s economy and thus reducing its dependence on oil. Vision 2030 is a part of the project. 26.500 km²’lik The project, which will spread over an area, is located in Tabuk province in the west of the country. First announced by the Crown Prince in 2017, Neom is a combination of the Greek words “neo” meaning “new” and “mustaqbal” meaning “future” in Arabic.

The project will extend into the Red Sea just south of the Suez Canal, a route through which about 13 percent of trade between Asia, Europe and the east coast of the United States is carried.
Floating industrial city Oxagon also plans to build a 1GW artificial intelligence data center. In an interview with Semafor, Oxagon CEO Vishal Wanchoo claimed that the first 400 MW phase could be signed this year. On the other hand, in whisper newspapers Elon MuskIt is rumored that he may also join NEOM. It is unclear whether this will be related to the data center at Oxagon, but there will be multiple data centers at NEOM. Musk’s idea of building a data center for Tesla and xAI companies does not seem far-fetched. In fact, Musk made the following statement a while ago: “Big projects like Neom in Saudi Arabia stand the test of time, I find them surprising.”

Other events at NEOM
On the other hand, NEOM, like all other mega projects, is at the center of various unpleasant events. In recent years, it has been reported that local people living in the area where NEOM was built were forcibly displaced. Colonel Rabih Alenezi, a former Saudi intelligence officer, confirmed this information in May 2024.
Another problem encountered is the slow progress of the projects. The Vision 2030 target will probably extend into the 2040s. The goal of finishing in 2030 is next to impossible for The Line. The project was aimed to accommodate 1.5 million of the 9 million population in 2030, but in current data this number has dropped to only around 300 thousand. Worker deaths continue to shake the foundations of the project. Additionally, it is stated that the ecological effects of huge projects have not been adequately investigated. Ultimately, the construction of a structure 170 kilometers long and 200 meters high is expected to have radical effects.
